El paro card\u00edaco extrahospitalario afecta a aproximadamente 400 000 personas en Europa cada a\u00f1o (2). Dada la heterogeneidad de los aspectos geogr\u00e1ficos y log\u00edsticos, las particularidades de los pacientes, as\u00ed como los informes m\u00e9dicos y de la comunidad, existen diferencias sustanciales entre pa\u00edses. En cualquier caso, la media de incidencia global es de 55 casos de paro card\u00edaco extrahospitaliario por presunta causa card\u00edaca por cada 100 000 al a\u00f1o (2).<\/p>\n<h3>\u00bfC\u00f3mo tratar un paro card\u00edaco?<\/h3>\n<p>La resucitaci\u00f3n cardiopulmonar (RCP) es una maniobra de primeros auxilios que, si se usa a tiempo y de forma adecuada, puede salvar vidas en casos de paro card\u00edaco. Las acciones que los llamados \u00absocorristas\u00bb deben llevar a cabo incluyen: 1) r\u00e1pida activaci\u00f3n del servicio m\u00e9dico de emergencias llamando al n\u00famero de tel\u00e9fono espec\u00edfico; 2) iniciaci\u00f3n inmediata de RCP; 3) aplicaci\u00f3n y uso inmediatos de un desfibrilador automatizado externo (DAE) (4).<\/p>\n<p>Un DAE es un dispositivo que analiza el ritmo card\u00edaco y eval\u00faa si es desfibrilable, advierte al rescatista de si se requiere desfibrilaci\u00f3n y suministra una descarga en caso necesario. Dos electrodos conectados con el dispositivo se colocan en el pecho del paciente. Un algoritmo en el interior del dispositivo analiza el ritmo card\u00edaco y determina si es o no necesario suministrar una descarga para salvar al paciente. La causa de la gran variabilidad del rango de supervivencia no se conoce al completo, y los determinantes del resultado tienen que ser esclarecidos por completo. Se cree que los factores que influyen en los resultados no solo dependen de las diferentes organizaciones sanitarias a nivel nacional o de la hora de llegada de los servicios m\u00e9dicos de emergencia. Los factores relacionados con los \u00absocorristas\u00bb, como el tiempo que se tarda en reconocer un paro card\u00edaco hasta la realizaci\u00f3n de la RCP, la calidad de la RCP y la disponibilidad o consciencia de la presencia de un dispositivo DAE en espacios p\u00fablicos puede jugar un papel importante (6).<\/p>\n<p>De hecho, se han emprendido numerosas iniciativas a nivel nacional para concienciar a la poblaci\u00f3n sobre el reconocimiento y el tratamiento del paro card\u00edaco extrahospitalario y facilitar la participaci\u00f3n prehospitalaria \u00abcadena de supervivencia\u00bb.
